Through the Rolling Fields, Landscape mixed media painting tutorial

This mixed media painting on canvas was inspired by a picture I took during our summer road trip to Alberta. I used acrylics, and pastels to paint and painted with brush, knife and occasionally my fingers:-)

drawing on canvas

This is my red under-painting, I drew a very simple outline of my landscape with a white pastel. The blue marks are some stamping I made to add a bit of texture.

Introducing some blue acrylic, whenever I add a color in a part of the painting I like to add touches of the same color in other areas of the painting.

I am unifying the sky with a layer of white paint diluted in water and the foreground with a layer of orange and yellow diluted in water.

tissue paper textures

Here I start to define more elements in the landscape, the path had been painted with red acrylics and I made patterns in the wet paint with a textured tissue paper.

acrylic landscape painting : glazing colors

I continue adding colors with glazes of different colors ( acrylic mixed with medium) and paint the bushes on the left adding texture with the painting knife.

I adjust colors working now with pastels until I am satisfied with the result.

    beautiful , quiet painting
lovely to see your progression through the paint

on a technical note: do you wait for the glaze to dry or go in wet for another texture?

    1. Hello Bethsciallo,
Thanks for your comment, you question is interesting. I usually work by layers so I am applying the colors separately one on top of each other. I will sometimes mix them when they are still wet, like for the blue and white on the sky in this example (that I applied with a rubber spatula and a brush), but will usually avoid to mix my glazes. Especially because I don’t have an exact idea of the final color until it is dried, the medium making the colors look milky.
I use glazes here just for the lasts steps to tie the colors together and adjust the intensity of colors, I toned down a bit the blue of the sky for example
