Go back to class: 26 weeks of intensive explorations
Here are some lists of supplies of what you can expect to use for the 26 weeks of intensive explorations Online class
Depending on what media you want to train more in, you won’t need all of these supplies. For example if you are more interested in watercolor painting, you can ignore the acrylic list. I recommend you to try to use what you already have as most of the classes allow for the use of various medium.
Painting
Paper and canvas
- Paper: A pack of mixed media paper or Bristol paper
- You will also need a few sheets of Yupo paper.
Optional:
If you would rather work on canvas: A few primed canvas: 12×12 or 16×16 inches are a good size. It won’t take you too long to paint but you still have enough space to work on details. You will still need a bit of paper for the few classes that are more about drawing, ink or watercolor.
Acrylics
- A few colors of fluid acrylic, don’t buy too much as you can mix colors. A good selection of colors would be:
- The three primaries: primary red, blue and yellow.
- 2-3 colors of your choice
- Regular bodied white acrylic
- A few regular bodied acrylic colors that you like.
- Acrylic medium in matte or glossy
- Krylon workable fixative
- Alcohol like rubbing alcohol (70 or 90%)
- A few brushes, if you don’t have any I would try with a simple set like this one: Round sizes 2, 6, 10, and Flat size 1/2″ and 1″
I am a Blick Art Materials affiliate and I receive a small compensation for sales. That does not effect in any way the cost of the purchaser’s order but it helps me keeping the content of this blog free.
Optional
- Alcohol based ink in 1 or 2 colors
- Varnish if you want to apply a finish to the paintings ( I recommend Liquitex Soluvar Varnish or Gamblin GamVar Premixed Picture Varnish)
- A dipping pen to add designs with fluid acrylic. My favorite nib is the speedball 512 Bowl Pointed, but you can try different nibs and see what you think works the best for your style.
Gouache
You will need just one color of gouache or tempera paint for the ink resist class. If you don’t have any, try to buy a light color so you can see it on the white of your paper or canvas but so it would not leave a too visible color stain.
Pastels
- A few colors of oil pastels to use as a resist with watercolor on yupo paper
- A few colors of dry pastels, the least expensive would be to buy a box of pastels and start from there.
Ink
Watercolor
- A few watercolor tubes or a pan set. Don’t buy too many colors as you can mix most of them.
- A few brushes, if you don’t have any I would try with a simple set like this one: Round sizes 2, 6, 10, and Flat size 1/2″ and 1″
Optional
- A small bottle of masking fluid
- A silicon brush to apply the masking fluid, like the brand color shaper in an Angle Chisel or taper point
Drawing
- Graphite(maybe a 2H, HB and 2B)
- Charcoal, 1 stick of soft non compressed charcoal
- A fine tip marker, like the ones you use for writing
- A white eraser
- A kneaded eraser
- Paper: A pack of mixed media paper or Bristol paper
- Krylon workable fixative
Optional
A few water based felt-tips markers if you want to try the self portrait technique with the mirror.
