What are the advantages of working in series
December 15, 2014 2021-07-03 17:26What are the advantages of working in series
I recently worked on a series of 8 12 x 12 inches flower paintings in mixed media, simultaneously, switching from one painting to the next until they were all done, that was the biggest series I ever worked on. I did find that there were many advantages working in series, as it is a very efficient and stress free way to paint.

Here are a few advantages of working in series
Less Pressure
- You are not focused on one painting only so there is less pressure on the outcome.
- If you get stuck at one point or need more time, you can switch to another painting from the same series
- If you have a temporary interest or obsession, it is a way to “get it out of your system”
Style consistency
- Working on a big series allows you to paint several paintings simultaneously, so they have a good chance to look consistent in style even though they will show variations.
- You will work on similar subjects and might also use the same color mixes in all the paintings of your series, making them look even more consistent.
- This is a great way to prepare paintings for an exhibition, especially if the paintings in your series are all the same size, subject and medium.
Efficiency
- You can be very efficient when working in series as you can switch to another painting any time you need to take a break from another one.
- You can take this opportunity to explore a subject, a technique or even colors combination in depth.
- Overall it will take you less time to finish the paintings if you paint them in a series than if you where painting them linearly, one after the other
- when the paintings are done, you can streamline all the tasks you have to do after: taking the pictures, posting on your website, social media, print on demand websites….
